What to wear up Namsan and N Seoul Tower

Bring a layer you were not planning to need. The summit is meaningfully colder and windier than street level — you are 243 m up a hill in the open, and the T6 deck is open air on top of that. Seoul’s street-level temperature is not the one you will be standing in. Wear shoes you can climb stairs in, because every route up involves either a real ascent or a steep approach walk, and carry water in summer. Winter is the one to take seriously: it is cold and windy at the top and it is also frequently the clearest air of the year, so the best views come on the least comfortable days.

By season

Spring and autumn are comfortable for the walk and still want a light jacket at the top after dark. Summer is hot and humid, so the concern is the climb rather than the summit — go early or after sunset, and something you do not mind sweating through. Winter needs a proper coat plus something for your hands and ears, because the wind up there is the difference between the summit and the street. The seasonal picture is on the best time to visit.

Shoes matter more than the coat

Even if you take the cable car, the approach from Myeongdong Station to the base station is ten to fifteen steep minutes, and there is a short climb or escalator run at the top. If you walk it, you are on made paths and wooden staircases for twenty-five minutes or more. Ordinary trainers are fine; the shoes you bought for the flight home are not. The routes are described on walking up Namsan.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold at N Seoul Tower?

Colder than the street, and windier. You are 243 m up on an exposed hill and the T6 deck is open air, so bring a layer even in mild weather. In winter, treat it as a proper coat day.

What shoes should I wear?

Something you can climb stairs and slopes in. Every route involves either an uphill walk or a steep approach to the cable car station — the routes are compared on how to get there.

What should I wear in summer?

Light clothing you do not mind sweating in, and carry water. Seoul summers are hot and humid and the climb is continuous, so the heat on the way up is a bigger problem than the temperature at the top.
